Resizing an image

What is the Resize Tool?

One of the more essential and common feature for editing Images or Photos is the Resize tool. You will find it located in the Editor on the far left menu called Tools:

Open Project/Image -> Click Tools -> Click Resize

I want to Resize my Image

Can do! You can resize the Image by simply:

  1. Inputting a new value for the Width or Height
  2. You can manually resize the image directly in the canvas with your mouse by toggling the frame of the image
Click on either the Width or Height Fields and you can edit the value set for it

I don't want my Image to look cropped or stretched

Notice the "Lock" icon between the Width and Height fields. This Lock icon will keep the Shape /Aspect Ratio of your image constant and without any unwanted cropping or stretching.

This means It's Locked. This is set by default as to avoid any unwanted cropping or stretching

This means it's Unlocked. You will just need to click on the Locked icon to allow yourself to change independently the Width or Height however you deem fit. Just note this may lead to image cropping or stretching.

What is "Aspect Ratio"?

You will notice also that based on your image's resolution/dimension (Width/Height) that you will automatically get the Aspect Ratio.

The Aspect ratio helps determine, in simple terms, what is the shape of the image (Square /Lanscape/Portrait/Other). You may wants to keep your Image's Aspect Ratio at 1.5:1 (Landscape Shape) but change the dimensions to be bigger or smaller.

When it comes to printing, the Resolution/Dimensions determines the quality of the printing VS the size of the paper. However, the Aspect Ratio represents the Photo's shape (Square, Landscape, Portrait or other).

It's important to note that Swap arrow icon between the Aspect Ratio fields let's you do just that: swap values between the Width and Height 🙂

Clicking on that swap arrow icon

Will Turn your portrait Image from this:

To a Landscape Image with one click. You can easily select the image in the project view and adjust the positioning as well (EX: Higher to see more of the waves and center the beautiful town)

What is "Fit Dimensions"?

If you also have an image that is smaller/larger than your current Project's Dimensions, You'll have the option to quickly to resize it to fit the Width or Height.

  1. You'll notice Fit Dimensions is Active if the image you've got elected is smaller / larger than the dimensions of your project.
Let's say you just dragged/selected an image into a blank project. You'll see on the left side menu the option to make this image fit either the Width or Height is Active

If you click "By Width" you will see the image is resized to fit the dimensions Horizontally.

If you click "By Height" you will see the image is resized to fit the dimensions Vertically.

  1. It's important to note that you can fit an image inside a project view either by Width or Height, but not both.
With the image selected, you are able to move it freely inside the project view.

Why does say my image size is currently my Project's dimensions?

Yes! For Ribbet users looking to start editing a single image we make sure the Image size and the Project Dimensions are the same. So if you resize your image, the Project Dimensions will share the same Width and Height.

For more information you can see this page for more information: Add Custom Dimensions

Why can't I resize my image over 2048 PX

For Ribbet users with a FREE Subscription, the maximum resolution for both Project Dimensions and Images is 2048 Pixels. To know if you have a Free account, you can quickly see that you have an "Upgrade" option in the top right corner on both the Editor and the Editor Homepage

The max limit of 2048 Pixels (Width and Height) is still good for Digital Assets OR For Personal Photo printing

I still can't resize images over 2048 PX and I have the PRO plan 😐

Ah! That's because you have your Image Quality Settings set to "Optimised" which limits Image resolution to 2048 Pixels. But you can easily change that by switching Image Quality to "Advanced":

  1. Click on your Profile icon (top right in the Editor or Editor Homescreen)
  2. Click on "Settings"
  3. Go to Image Quality and Click "Change"
  4. Select "Advanced" and return to the Editor
  5. The max limit of 2048 will be removed
Go Profile -> Settings -> Image Quality: Change -> Select Advanced Quality -> return to Editor

Why can't I resize my image over 4096 PX

For the purposes of editing Images the maximum size available is maximum 4096 Pixels. While we are working on extending this limit, we also need to take into account the performance and speed of the Editor.
